Hawa Mahal

Description

Hawa Mahal is a palace in Jaipur, India, and it is named so because it was mainly a high screen wall built so the women of the royal household could observe street festivals while unseen from the outside. This way they could feel the sense of freedom while managing their customs. Hawa Mahal was Constructed of pink and red sandstone, the palace sits on the boundary of the City Palace, Jaipur, and expands to the zenana, or women's room. Hawa Mahal was the favourite resort of Maharaja Jai Singh because of the magnificence and built-in interior of the Mahal. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built the structure in 1799. Ustad Lal Chand designed this Mahal in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god.

History

Its architectural and cultural ancestry is a perfect reflection of a fusion of Hindu Rajput construction and the Islamic Mughal construction. The Rajput style can be seen in the form of curved canopies, lotus and floral arrangement, fluted pillars, and the Islamic style as noticeable in its stone inlay filigree work and arches (as distinguished from its resemblance with the Panch Mahal known as the palace of winds - at Fatehpur Sikri). Sawai Pratap Singh was a devotee of Hindu Lord Krishna. He asked Ustad Lal Chand the chief architect to construct the building to honour the Lord in some way. Hence the Mahal is built in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown.

  • Its rare five-storey exterior is similar to the honeycomb of a beehive having 953 small windows known as jharokhas spruce up with intricate latticework. The first intention of the lattice was to grant royal ladies to watch everyday life in the street down without being seen, as they had to accept strict "purdah" (face cover). The lattice design also allows fresh air from the Venturi effect through the tricky arrangement, air conditioning the whole area all along the high temperatures in summers. Aside from the magnificent architecture and the breeziness of the palace, there is a museum that is worth a visit. History and Art lovers will undoubtedly enjoy the enormous collection of relic, weapons and articles which were used by royal families.
